Following the uprisings in Minneapolis in June 2020, the Seward Cafe paused our restaurant operations to focus on immediate community needs. Our kitchen transformed into a host space for various groups needing commercial kitchen space to cook and distribute meals across the city, whether as part of mutual aid efforts or as a place to kick-off exciting local food projects.

Southside Food Share

Southside Food Share has been providing hot meals to houseless people in South Minneapolis for about five years. During the summer of 2020, they went from cooking and distributing meals two days per week to five. As of June 2021, Food Share uses the Seward Cafe’s kitchen Tuesdays-Thursdays. Midori’s Floating World Cafe

Midori’s Floating World Cafe is serving to-go Japanese cuisine out of the Cafe’s building Friday-Sunday 4pm-8pm. Their building, on the corner of Minnehaha Avenue and Lake Street, was damaged during the uprisings. We are honored to have this small family business in our space while they find a new home. The Shui Project

We were also delighted to host The Shui Project in our space last summer. The Shui Project is chef Kenji Yee’s innovative food service project which started in his Loring Park apartment, and now operates out of Keefer Court’s building on the West Bank. Each of Kenji’s events were completely donation-based and featured goods and performances of local artists. They provided free delivery to Black and disabled people. Keep on eye on this project, as we’re sure it will continue to grow into amazing new endeavors.
